Practical guide

Build a color palette and check text contrast

Create a simple color harmony and use contrast ratios as an accessibility check during interface design.

Choose a base color

Start with a brand or interface color in HEX format. A palette can help coordinate related accents, but it does not determine which colors communicate the correct meaning for your product.

Select a harmony

Complementary colors sit opposite each other on the hue wheel. Analogous colors are adjacent; triadic colors are spaced around the wheel. These are starting points, not finished design systems. Adjust lightness, saturation, and neutral surfaces for real interface needs.

Check text and background pairs

Use the Color Palette & Contrast Checker to compare approximate black and white text ratios for each swatch. For a finished interface, test the actual foreground/background pair and applicable WCAG criteria, including component states and larger text.

Do not rely on color alone

Use labels, icons, shape, or text along with color to express warnings, errors, and success. A palette tool cannot evaluate the full context, color-vision differences, or every rendered display.
